Engagement Rings
Engagement Ring origin is disputed and there may well be many different stories from different continents. The Engagement Ring slavery theory suggests the finger ring to be a ‘slave band', denoting that woman was the man's property. Slaves were forbidden to wear rings, even mounted with a Sapphire, Ruby or Emerald, throughout the Roman Republic but in later years, iron rings denoted their status while silver was worn by freed slaves. The wearing of Gold Rings was initially restricted but they were eventually permitted to all those who were free. When Emperor Justinian came to power, all the restrictions were then lifted. Platinum Engagement Rings were not an option at this time!
