Although often considered synonymous with the color blue, sapphire can be beautiful beyond blue, and display the bright fireworks of sunset colors: yellow, pink, orange and purple, all of which are referred to as 'fancy sapphires'. The pink variety of sapphire, however, is known either as pink ruby or pink sapphire, both belonging to the same mineral and amongst the most beautiful of the corundum family. A popular variety of fancy sapphires is of orange color with a fine pinkish undertone which has been given the poetic name 'Padparadisha' meaning 'lotus flower'. This variety is very rare and sells at a premium close to the price of fine blue sapphires. Other popular shades of fancy sapphires are yellow and bright orange, with their delicate blended shades of sunset. As a rule, the more clear and vivid the color, the more valuable the fancy sapphire, but irrespective of the color, sapphires combine durability and beauty for generations of pleasure.
