Bangles were amongst the most fashionable arm ornaments of the 1870's, handcrafted in a variety of styles, mostly designed as wide gold bands with circular gem-set motif, Renaissance inspired emblematic decors or with detachable cartouche style decors which could also be worn as brooches. Egyptian, Greek and Etruscan archeology inspired bracelets worn by high society Victorian ladies while the Renaissance Holbeinesque influence resulted in the most aesthetic and highly prized Victorian bangle bracelets, often as a constituent part of a complete 'parure' with a matching necklace, a brooch and a pair of earrings.
