This Georgian emerald Antique Necklace is certainly a rare find, especially in such good condition. Constructed entirely in English 15ct yellow gold, this chain and pendant collectively weigh 19g, the chain measures 17 inches long and the pendant measures 2 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. Mounted with 7 foil-backed cushion and square-cut emeralds graded 'bottle-green' color and 'fair' clarity, these lively beryl-family emeralds are mounted in foil-backed settings, typical of Georgian Jewelry. Foil-backing is when stones are mounted over a concave shell, lined with reflective foil in order to attract maximum light, bounce it off the rear walls and provide substantial reflection from behind. This was of course, a couple of centuries ago, well-before the art of stone cutting had really been explored. These well-matched green emeralds, measuring approximately 7 x 5.5mm, 4.5mm and 5.5mm square and 4 x 3mm, are accentuated with 0.50cts of prong-set old mine-cut diamonds graded J color and SI clarity range while a quatrefoil assemblage of seed-pearls graded ?antique-cream? color with 'good' nacre measuring 3mm in diameter, are mounted in aesthetically pleasing contrast. Extremely rare to find a matching set of chain and pendant, this original patina pendant is entirely constructed of Etruscan Revival scrolls, while the chain bears Gothic revival mille grain motif. It is extraordinary to find that this 200 year old necklace bears the original clasp, bale, pin and chain from approximately two centuries ago and one wonders where and how it was kept in such fabulous condition, having barely been worn for 2,400 months!
