Necklaces of the Retro era were usually short and encircled the base of the neck with chunky gold chains composed of fancy links or twisted wire. Among the most typical Retro style necklaces were those designed as chains of flexible tubular linking known as 'Brazilian' chains, also referred to as 'gas pipe' linking which was a rounded and tubular version of the relatively flat snake necklaces. Another characteristic of the 1940's and 1950's period was a return to differentiation between jewels for day-wear and ornaments for evening wear. Day jewelry was a triumph of gold in the form of tubular and snake necklaces, corded wire, fringes and woven patterns, or a 'bib' necklace with graduated width, preferably crafted in yellow gold, while evening jewelry preferred white gold and platinum with cascades of diamonds. The highly flexible necklaces characterized by massive gold surfaces and graduated widths remained in vogue for several decades.
