The first major Egyptian Revival period was after Napoleon's campaigns in Egypt (1798-99) and the subsequent British occupation, during which time Europeans became fascinated with ancient Egyptian architecture and furniture. Egyptian ornamentation comprised of scarab beetles, sphinx, winged lions, the winged disk symbol of the sun God and lotus blossoms frequently gilded and more recently applied to modern forms in the creation of the 'Egyptian Revival' hybrid. Revived again in the 1820's to the 1850's, Egyptian Revival reemerged resulting from famous 19th Century archaeological digs. This style is distinguished by its adaptation of Egyptian forms and motifs, as well as the use of bold colors, reflecting the desire for exotic by the general populous.
