According to ancient Egyptian myths, the sun rolls across the sky each day transforming bodies and souls. Scarabs, popularized as amulets in ancient Egypt, were seen as earthly symbols of this heavenly cycle, rolling dung into a ball for the purposes of eating and laying eggs. Later, scarabs were given as 'gifts' and even incorporated into tombs, as grave goods to smooth the deceased's journey into the afterlife or as offerings to the gods.
