Although there is evidence of cuff fasteners in ancient hieroglyphics, even included in Kung Tut's crypt, cufflinks as we know them today were introduced by the French in the mid 1600's and, through the lapse of time, moved from the realm of practicality to that of personal adornment. Until the early 17th century gentlemen had used ribbons or lace to hold their shirt sleeves closed. The late 1700's witnessed new styles of cufflinks which were readily adopted by the middle-class, particularly tradesmen, and by early 1840's cufflinks were produced in the form of gold, silver or pearl buttons held together by metal, often brass chains.
