The earliest surviving records of an Antique Diamond Engagement Ring being given was in 1477 from Archduke Maximillian of Hamburg to Mary of Burgundy and was no doubt set with an Antique-cut Diamond. Art Deco Diamond Engagement Rings were mounted with sapphires, emeralds and rubies and worn on the third finger, left hand, originally a Roman custom and named a ‘betrothal' ring meaning ‘truth'. In 1880, De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. was formed and Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian Diamond Engagement Rings were all under the control of the Englishman Cecil John Rhodes. The manufacture of Platinum Diamond Engagement Rings was banned during WWII as the platinum was saved for armaments, slowing the sale of Antique Diamond Engagment Rings.
