This Victorian intaglio necklace with 14ct yellow gold intaglio frames and 9ct yellow gold integrated chain weighs 20.5g and measures 18 inches long, 20mm wide and 4mm deep. This authentic Victorian intaglio necklace is inspired by the early 1840's 'festonné' design of necklaces, first appearing in France following the French occupation of Algeria and the consequent trend of Moorish inspired fashion which spread rapidly throughout Europe, with great impact upon jewelry design. This Victorian necklace is adorned with a trio of quadrangular, artfully intaglio engraved carnelian plaques graded 'reddish-brown' color and 'very good' clarity, measuring 19mm and 16mm square respectively, framed in 9ct yellow gold. The trio of carnelian intaglio plaque depicts the immaculately carved portraits of a helmeted Roman warrior bearing a curly beard, positioned in the center, flanked by enchanting Romanesque female silhouettes, possibly mythological figures, with absorbing curly locks, attached with a ribbon and adorned with a hair ornament. The integrated 9ct yellow gold is composed of inversely mounted ovular links, extended with delicate globular chains at both ends, and secured with a lobster clasp closure.
