This typical Victorian Jewelry item is a Scottish moss agate brooch handcrafted in sterling silver, weighs 14.7g and measures 2 inches long, 1.75 inches wide and 9mm deep. This authentic 1850's Antique Pin of impressive Celtic inspiration incorporates a dual-tiered round openwork plaque centered with an emblematic Celtic decor of shield format. The latter is rendered in custom shield-carved moss agate measuring 19 x 21mm, graded 'Grey with Tan & Green' color. Framed within an artfully chased silver boader, the emblematic shield is surrounded by a 'belt with buckle' perimeter composed of custom-cut matching color moss agate profiles, complemented by a silver buckle. The reverse is rendered in sterling silver, outfitted with the original hinged pin and C-hook.
Scottish jewelry and their motifs flourished during the reign of Queen Victoria who had a great passion for Scotland, consequently she purchased Balmoral Castle in 1848, which continues to be used by the Royal Family today. Her genuine love for all things Scottish promoted new trends in jewelry, inspired by traditional Scottish themes such as round brooches mounted with a central citrine, heart, dirks, strap, ribbon-bow, buckle and the well-known St. Andrews Cross, which was a common emblem all Scotsmen were entitled to wear.
