This Art Deco opal ring with old mine-cut diamonds in antique style is crafted in lavish platinum, weighs 4.1g and measures 15mm wide and 4.5mm deep. This alluring ring of immaculate artisan-ship combines the refinement of the Edwardian garland style and the distinct contrasting features of the 1920's Art Deco design. Centered with an attention-seeking 2.27ct opal cabochon, measuring 12mm long and 10mm wide, graded a delightful 'opalescent pinkish-orange' color, mounted in a subtly elevated position within an ovular setting. Surmounting an intricate openwork gallery, the opulent center-stone is embraced by exquisite garland style shoulders, incorporating diamond adorned scrolls and foliate inspired profiles enhanced by artistic mille grain application. The latter and the ornate gallery are cumulatively adorned with 0.40cts of bead-set old mine-cut diamonds graded H color and SI1 clarity. Substantial, elaborately constructed shoulders descend diminutively to merge into a spherical platinum band and an easily sizable shank.

Australia is in fact the opal's classical country of origin with ninety-five percent of all fine opals originating from its remote and dry deserts. The history of opals began millions of years ago when parts of Australia were covered by a vast inland sea and stone sediment was deposited along the shoreline. With the flooding back of water masses, water containing silica was flushed back into the cavities of the sedimentary rocks and the resulting silica stone was gradually transformed into opal. The origin of the name opal is believed to be in the Sanskrit word 'upala' meaning 'valuable stone', being in turn the root of the Greek term 'opallios' which translates as 'color change'. In the days of the Roman antiquity, there existed a so-called 'opalus' or a ‘stone from several elements’ which indicates that the ancient Romans already had an idea about the opal’s striking play of color.
