This Art Nouveau Arts and Crafts ring is crafted in 14k yellow gold, weighs 11.5g and measures 27mm wide and 9mm deep. Epitomizing the distinct features of the English Arts & Crafts jewelry style, this elaborately designed ring of unique aesthetic is designed as an openwork plaque of ovular format, adorned with a fascinating assemblage of asymmetrically juxtaposed precious and semi-precious stones. A significant and fiery high grade 1.11ct old mine-cut diamond measuring 6.18mm in diameter, graded E color and VS1 clarity is collet-mounted in the center of the ovular plaque, complemented by an alluring demantoid green garnet, a fascinating opal cabochon and four complementary old mine-cut diamonds. The latter cumulatively weigh 1.53cts, graded 'light brown'(S) color and VS2-SI1 clarity range. The absorbing 0.49ct full-cut demantoid green garnet is graded an eye-pleasing 'vivid chartreuse' color and 'good' clarity with minute surface abrasions, to be expected considering the age. The eye-catching round opal cabochon with its distinct magical play of light and color measures 7mm in diameter and radiates with 'flashes of chartreuse and violet' color. Positioned amidst fascinating 'non-conformist’ foliate themed profiles artfully rendered in repoussé gold, this enriched accoutrement of diamonds, demantoid green garnet and opal surmounts an openwork gallery, embraced by meticulously forked and textured yellow gold shoulders. A spherical yellow gold band and an easily sizable shank conclude this unusual and very collectible Arts & Crafts ring of unique aesthetic beauty, the most striking thing being that this very high grade diamond has not been 'stolen' from this very collectible ring to be made into an engagement ring.
The Art Nouveau movement influenced the jewelry design of most European countries in varying degrees. In England, the phenomenon of reaction against the past and its ‘stale’ traditions was embraced by the Arts & Crafts Movement and developed somewhat differently, although aiming at the same results: Jewels of artistic rather than intrinsic value and a ban on mechanization.
The origins of the Arts & Crafts movement can be traced back to the mid nineteenth century when the first reactions to mass production made their appearance. John Ruskin set the tone of the movement and William Morris soon became its leader. The aim of the movement was to resuscitate the dead tradition of producing jewels designed and manufactured by the same artist. In spite of the amateurish approach to the production of pieces and the handling of materials used, the great strength of the jewels produced at the time was in the new and fundamental approach to design.
