Produced from the early 1940′s in Italy, these shell carvings, usually a female clad in an inlaid hard-stone dress, was adorned with gem-set jewels. This technique was pioneered by Dafrique of France, famous for his ‘cameos animés’, particularly the hard-stone cameos of negro girls clad in ruby and rose-cut diamonds.
