Cleopatra Reportedly Drank a Pearl!

Long before written history, human beings discovered the first pearl while searching seashores for food, and for thousands of years, the pearl with its warm inner glow and shimmering iridescence has been amongst the most highly prized gems known to mankind. Innumerable references to this unique organic gem can be found in the religion and mythology of ancient cultures. Egyptians were buried with their pearls as a symbol of prestige and eternal peace and Cleopatra reportedly dissolved a most valuable pearl in a glass of wine and drank it, only to win a wager with Mark Anthony. In ancient Rome, pearls were considered the ultimate symbol of social standing, and the ancient Greeks held the gem in highest esteem for both its unrivaled beauty and its association with love and matrimony.
