Rodarte was founded in Los Angeles, California in 2005 by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the brand deriving its name from Kate and Laura’s mother’s maiden name. Stocked globally by names such as Barneys, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Nordstrom, Rodarte is worn by easily recognizable names such as Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Obama.
The dark undercurrent to Rodarte’s designs are none more apparent than in the crowning designs incorporating twisted barbed-wire headbands constructed from twisted copper, gold, and silver-plated metal jewelry made in-house for the occasion.
The Mulleavys are known for applying couture-like craftsmanship to clothes that explore the dark undercurrents of prettiness—touching on such not-exactly-froufrou themes as Japanese horror flicks and apocalyptic destruction.
This steel and 18k gold bicycle chain bracelet below could easily be mistaken for deriving from Rodarte.
