Victorian Repousse Lion's Head Bracelet

Victorian Lion's Head Bracelet
Print This Page SCROLL DOWN - MORE IMAGES BELOW

This Victorian repousse lion head bracelet is crafted in 14k yellow gold, weighs 13.1g and measures 6.5 inches long, 21mm wide and 8mm deep. This authentic late Victorian repoussé lion head bracelet of exquisite artisanship is composed of fourteen 'baton' hinged ovular links constructed in elegantly matted, hollowed 14k yellow gold. An artistically sculptured male lion's head rendered in repoussé gold constitutes the central decor of this intriguing Victorian repoussé bracelet, masterfully crafted to depict the anatomically accurate head of this jungle king. Clenching a fiery 0.08ct old mine-cut diamond graded K color and SI2 clarity between powerful jaws, this majestic 'King of the roaring species' to which lions are referred, is contemplating his 'kingdom' with a triumphant, fear-evoking visual expression. The lion's eyes are mounted with a pair of 'pigeon-blood' colored cabochon rubies, measuring 1.5mm in diameter. Elaborately rendered in repoussé gold, all features of the lion's face are realistically presented by means of artistic texturing, engraving and scalloping of 14k yellow gold. The artistry is particularly visible in the lion's large, bushy mane, cascading down around his neck, accentuating his facial expression which is masterfully achieved by the artist. The reverse bears a tender and affectionate dedication in Italic engraving reading 'Phyllis, Sweet Sixteen' apparently a sixteenth birthday or anniversary present to a cherished daughter or granddaughter. This authentic Victorian gold bracelet of unique craftsmanship and aesthetic charm secures with a concealed tongue-and-groove clasp closure and a delicate chain for additional safety.

Amongst animal motifs used in antique jewelry, the lion has been a most symbolic source of inspiration. Not only because the lion is known as the 'king of the jungle' across most cultures of the world, but due to the lion's royal look and attitude and his supreme sense of pride, which was accepted as a sign of royalty all over the world from as early as the Roman empire. Precisely due to his inborn pride, a lion does not hide in order to avoid threats of other animals or human beings. The lion lives in the open and controls its territory like a true king, with a kingly mane and a pride that sets him apart from his wild competitors. The Bible and the Geeta of the Hindus mention the lion as the king of the beasts.
