This antique vanity set from the 1840’s consists of a Victorian English sterling silver mirror and a silver brush of identical decoration, both of which bear the official hallmark of Birmingham, England.
The Sterling silver vanity mirror weighs 529g and measures 11 inches long, 5.25 inches wide, and exactly one inch deep. In pristine condition despite the considerable passage of time, this exquisite, finely crafted Sterling silver mirror depicts a magnificent and lavishly detailed assemblage of floral and foliate motif profiles and scrolls of Neo-classical inspiration, rendered in artistic repoussé work. The mirror is cut in a romantically inspired, stylized heart format, secured in a finely handcrafted Sterling silver frame, exposing alternately positioned floral and ribbon-bow motif profiles which extend to decorate the handle. The reverse of the mirror depicts a magnificent assemblage of floral and foliate motif profiles and scrolls of Neo-classical inspiration, rendered in artistic repoussé work. A trio of masterfully sculptured, temptingly alluring cherubs complements this breath-taking Neo-classical scenery, their delicate silhouettes covered in part by foliage while their beautifully sculptured faces depict three distinct, yet equally enchanting expressions. The masterfully rendered repoussé work extends to the handle, while the heavenly garden of flowers and cherubs (permitting a personal monogram)of a sophisticated Victorian lady in highly decorative Italic script. The Sterling silver brush weighing 257.6g and measuring 9 inches long, 4.5 inches wide and 1.75 inches deep (including bristles) is ornamented on reverse with 'en suite' Neo-classically inspired repoussé motifs and features a plain Sterling silver frame securing the well-preserved, abundant bristles.
