Tiger's eye (also called tiger-eye) is a chatoyant gemstone that is usually yellow- to red-brown, with a silky luster, and the appearance of a ‘moving eye’, which is the reason for assigning this name to it. Tiger’s eye is a member of the quartz group, with physical and optical properties identical or very close to those of single-crystal quartz. It is usually cut ‘en cabochon’ in order to best display its ‘chatoyancy’. A red variety of this gem can be produced through gentle heat treatment and the naturally honey-colored variety is often used as a substitute for the much higher valued cat’s eye chrysoberyl.
Tiger’s eye is a gemstone of spiritual and medicinal significance in many parts of the world and is described as ‘a stone for the mind, not the body’. It is believed to strongly focus the mind, and is therefore extremely popular and widely worn by spiritually inclined individuals and advocates of meditation. Some believe that to use maximum energy of the tiger’s eye, the stone should preferably be set in silver and worn (as ring or bracelet) on the right side of the body.
