Engagement Rings
The origin of Engagement Rings is unsure and there may well be many different stories from different continents. The slavery theory suggests the finger ring to be a ‘slave band', denoting that woman was the man's property. Slaves were forbidden to wear rings throughout the Roman Republic between 449-31BC but in later years, iron rings denoted their status while silver was worn by freed slaves. The wearing of Gold Rings was initially restricted but they were eventually permitted to all those who were free. When Emperor Justinian came to power, all the restrictions were then lifted. Platinum Engagement Rings were not an option at this time!
