This estate enamel pendant is crafted in 14k yellow gold, weighs 3.5g and measures 1.50 inches long, 1.50 inches wide and 15mm deep. In a captivating naturalistic style, this enchanting pendant of rare design depicts a reclining panther with out-stretched front legs and a gracefully curvaceous body concealing the rear legs. The delicate features of this majestic creature are impeccably sculptured to represent the accurate anatomy of a panther, enameled in the most natural colors of brown and white with black spots. The paws, ears and the tail-end are preserved in 14k yellow gold, enriching the color-contrasted aesthetic of the pendant. The smooth reverse of the piece features an internal 8mm bale to offer versatility of wear with different gold chains or bead necklaces of matching color.

Pierre Cartier in Paris was the avant-garde pioneer of the panther motif in jewelry design. Determined to diversify the hitherto traditional line of jewelry with purely conventional motifs, in the year 1915 he designed the first pendant watch with a panther motif for his wife. This new line, named 'pride of panthers’ was embraced with enthusiasm throughout Europe and soon encompassed individual pieces of jewelry as well as complete parures. Cartier's most famous design in this series was a brooch with a diamond and sapphire panther straddling a 152ct cabochon sapphire which was purchased by the Duke of Windsor in 1949. The increasing demand for whimsical jewels in the 1960's encouraged world jewelry designers to produce their own novelties and Van Cleef and Arples of New York designed their first pieces of jewelry with a lion head motif which was later expanded into Van Cleef's 'animal kingdom' line of design.
