This estate black spinel necklace with rubies, Tahitian pearls and a 'boulder' 14k yellow gold clasp weighs 64.5g and measures 17 inches long and 14mm wide. This captivating estate black spinel necklace of classically elegant aesthetic comprises three strands of faceted black spinel rondelles (360 in number) measuring 4.5mm wide and 3mm deep, graded 'jet-black' color. Strung on matching color black silk, these alluring gemstones of vitreous, sub-metallic luster are complemented by 60 faceted ruby rondelles, measuring 4.5mm wide and 2.5mm deep, graded 'burgundy' color and 'fair' clarity. Assembled as absorbing circular rings, the vividly-colored corundum are spaced by three Baroque Tahitian pearls measuring approximately 16mm long and 14mm wide, graded 'black with green and blue hue' color. A color-contrasting 14k yellow gold Baroque shaped clasp measuring 19mm long and 14mm wide, matching the size and shape of the Tahitian pearls, secures this estate black spinel necklace of sophisticated feminine aesthetic.

Spinel is a naturally occurring crystalline gemstone with a spectacular array of beautiful colors. It is magnesium-based and occurs in metamorphic and plutonic rock formations. The highest quality specimens come from Burma where spinel was recognized as a separate gem species in 1587, while in other parts of the world it continued to be regarded as a variety of ruby for a long time. In addition to nuances of rich red, spinel can be found in a range of alluring pastel shades of pink and purple. Of particular interest is a vivid hot pink with a tinge of orange mined in Burma, which is one of the most spectacular gemstone colors seen in any species at all. The faceted black spinel is another popular, relatively rare variety, mostly used in the production of evening jewelry pieces. The name spinel is derived from the Latin term 'spina' translated as 'thorn' due to the sharp and pointed form of uncut spinel crystals.
