The culture of the Renaissance had a significant impact on stimulating the revival of 'the art of engraving' and also the desire to collect intaglio-engraved stones and gems which had survived from antiquity. Benevenuto Cellini described in his memoirs some of the exquisite gems, including emerald, ruby, topaz, and carnelian, dug up by the peasants in Roman vineyards and sold for a few coins. They were set in rings, and served as sources of inspiration for artists throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Rings were handcrafted with intaglio engraved busts of Roman emperors and empresses, Mars Hercules, the Gorgon Medusa and the like were carved from fine carnelian, chalcedony and precious sapphires and rubies. Pride in the possession of intaglio-engraved gems is reflected in the quality of the existing ring settings devised for them, which encompassed elaborate engravings on the shoulders such as torch-bearing nude figures and floral designs.
