Chalcedony is a variety of quartz formed not of one single crystal but a number of finely grained micro-crystals. The variety of chalcedonies is even greater than that of transparent quartz and covers a wide range of solid colors. Included in the extensive varieties of chalcedonies are agates, with banded patterns, bloodstone with red spots on a green background, jasper that can look like a landscape painting and black onyx which is another staple of the jewelry industry. Chrysoprase, a bright apple green and translucent gemstone, is the most valued variety of chalcedony and was a particular favorite of Frederick the Great of Prussia and can be seen today decorating many historic buildings in Prague.
Crystal is the transparent and colorless variety of quartz, al so referred to as ‘rock crystal’. Its derivation from the Greek name ‘crystallos’ meaning ice led the ancients to consider it as a ‘compact form of ice’ rather than a member of the quartz family. Although colorless quartz is relatively common, large and flawless specimens of crystal are not. Crystal has often been used in jewelry particularly in carved pieces. Many stunning Art Deco jewelry designs featured the black and white quartz combination of crystal and onyx. Crystals have also become desirable in jewelry due to the popular legends about their powers. Many people believe that wearing quartz crystals benefits their health and spiritual well-being.
