This Victorian Necklace with cultured pearls, emerald, rose-cut diamonds and peridot cabochons is in antique Mogul Revival style. Weighing 32.9g, this stunning and colorful necklace comprises an 18k yellow gold emerald, rose-cut diamond and polychrome enamel pendant measuring 60mm long (including bale) and 26mm wide and a supporting cultured pearl necklace with peridot cabochons accentuated with a pair of 24k yellow gold discs. Measuring 18 inches long, this exquisite, elaborately designed and naturalistically inspired dual-sided pendant of antique Mogul inspiration depicts a highly stylized rosette, centered with a vivacious, significantly sized round-faceted emerald measuring 11.5mm in diameter. This attention-seeking precious stone of enchanting luminosity is graded 'foil-backed dark bottle-green' color and 'fair' clarity, mounted within an ornately chiseled foil-backed close setting. The temptingly delicate 'petals' of this alluring rosette radiate with piqué rose-cut diamonds measuring 3.5mm long and 3mm wide, graded 'foil-backed light-brown' color. A pear-shaped drop mounted with a matching grade rose-cut diamond measuring 5.5mm long and 4mm wide suspends 'en tremblant' from this exquisite floral decor, surmounted by additional foliate inspired profiles mounted with rose-cut diamonds. This regal quintessentially Mogul style pendant is artistically decorated on the reverse side with an aesthetically superb flower head rendered in translucent polychrome red enamel against a pastel-blue background, embellished with green enamel leaves and surrounded by a green and gold enamel striped perimeter. The diamond-adorned pear-shaped drop and the floral silhouette are enriched with red and green enamel on reverse. This exquisite Victorian Mogul style pendant enriched with 19 piqué rose-cut diamonds suspends 'en tremblant' through an ovular loop from the supporting necklace comprising a single-strand of round 'pinkish white' cultured pearls measuring 6.5mm in diameter, graded 'good' nacre. These iridescent organic gems of smooth texture are spaced by alluring 'pale-green' colored peridot cabochons measuring 2.5mm in diameter and graded 'good' clarity. A duo of 24k yellow gold discs spacing the centrally positioned pearls enhances the aesthetic beauty of this unique Mogul style necklace, secured by a marquise-shaped 14k gold tongue-and-groove clasp.

Originally referred to as ‘Mughal’, the Persian word for Mongol of which the name Mogul is the modern version, the term was used to refer to the Central Asian nomads claiming descent from the Mongol warriors. The Mughal Empire was founded in 1526 and, in spite of drastic upheavals, survived until 1857. According to historians, it was the greatest empire of the world for over two centuries. The most famous Mughal Emperor 'Shah Jahan' succeeded to the throne by mid-seventeenth century, giving rise to a period of cultural prosperity and development for his nation. His empire supported cultural life, directed the creation of libraries, and collections of paintings and various objects of art. Shah Johan’s reign is remembered primarily for his monumental architectural achievements, the most famous of which is the Taj Mahal, symbolizing the Mughal artistic achievements. The Mughal era was the most significant in Indian history with respect to a fruitful fusion of Indian, Persian and Central Asian artistic tradition. The Mughals appreciated fine things of life, produced masterfully designed artifacts and favored cultural activities. The most important of all however, was the secure framework provided by the Empire within which arts and artistic talents could flourish. The blending of Persian and Indian artistic heritage resulted in the production of valuable pieces of jewelry and decorative objects mostly made of gold and embellished with precious stones and exquisite enamels of innumerable design and color. Green and red, however, were the favorite colors of the emperors and hence the frequent use of emeralds and rubies in the production of the most valuable pieces of jewelry. Shah Jahan's own magnificent signet ring, kept at the State Hermitage Museum, is believed to be a unique piece of jewelry with an original intaglio engraving of the Shah’s name. The Mughal or Mogul revival style flourished throughout Europe, particularly in France during Victorian era and was revived in the 1920’s, primarily adopted by Cartier in a great variety of ornamental pieces of jewelry.
