This estate enamel snake pendant is crafted in 14k yellow gold, weighs 3.5g and measures 23.5mm long, 24mm wide and 14.5mm deep. Inspired by the serpent motif in vogue throughout the 19th century Victorian era, this enchanting pendant is designed in the form of a trefoil-motif coiled serpent immaculately decorated with brown, ivory and black enamel to depict a biologically accurate combination of colors and the spotted snake skin. The inner side of the pendant and the snake's arched head are preserved in 14k yellow gold, lending it a delightful color-contrasting element from all perspectives. The specific and rare design of this pendant offers ample versatility of wear with gold chains of distinct widths and designs or with bead and gemstone necklaces of matching colors.

Serpents have long symbolized the concept of eternity and been used as a talisman for longevity, health, and vitality. To the Aztec Indians the snake was a symbol of the sun and denoted the concept of perpetual time, without a beginning nor an end and a coiled snake signified the succession of the ages! To the ancient Egyptians, it was a sacred symbol and Egyptian divinities were depicted with snakes around their heads as epitome of power. In India, the serpent served as a talisman for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding and in the Greek mythology, serpents were sacred to the great god of medicine 'Aesculapius' based on the belief that life would be renewed at intervals whenever a serpent's skin was shed. Aesculapius carried a staff called a ‘caduceus’ around which was entwined a serpent as a symbol of health. It was from the staff of Aesculapius that the modern symbol of medical science was derived which has lived on to the present. For the Romans, serpent was the god of the household and rings in the form of a coiled serpent were worn to preserve health. A rebirth of the serpent as a jewelry motif took place when Prince Albert presented a serpent engagement ring to Queen Victoria. The serpent became increasingly popular and was worn as a talisman of good luck throughout the Victorian era.
