Cameo is a hard-stone or a shell into which a design is carved 'en relief', often contrasting the naturally occurring cameo colors. The fashion for cameos was brought back to France from Italy after the Italian Campaign of 1796. Napoleon was fascinated by their beauty and commissioned the mounting of several for his personal use in tiaras, necklaces, bracelets and earrings with gold bezels sometimes decorated with seed pearl borders. Cameos became fashionable once more by the middle of the 19th century, larger and bolder this time than during Napoleonic times. The same technique was pioneered in France by Dafrique who became famous for his 'cameo-anime', usually designed as hard-stone cameos of Negro girls clad in ruby and rose-cut diamonds.
