This antique jewelry item is an Art Nouveau dog brooch with old mine and rose-cut diamonds and rubies crafted in 18k yellow gold, weighing 11.7g and measuring 46mm long, 22mm wide and 3.5mm deep. Period designed at the turn of last century and inspired by the late Victorian 'novelty jewelry' incorporating predominantly animal motifs, this immaculately constructed and authentic Art Nouveau brooch, most likely of European provenance, depicts a duo of masterfully sculptured dogs. While one is depicted in a reclining position, apparently seeking attention through affectionate proximity, her partner contemplates attentively. The collars adjoined by means of a platinum chain, one is sporting 0.06cts of channel-set square-cut rubies graded 'pinkish-red' color and 'good' clarity mounted within yellow gold border, the other with 5 rose-cut diamonds mounted within platinum-topped mille grained rims respectively. The chain connecting their collars is composed of interlocking rectangular links, suspending 'en tremblant' a delicate platinum-topped collet mounted with a fiery 0.15ct old mine-cut diamond graded I color and SI3 clarity. Elaborately rendered in repoussé gold, all features of these highly cherished domestic animals including the ears, eyes and tails are realistically and accurately presented by means of artistic texturing, engraving and scalloping of 18k yellow gold, showing the remarkable perspective achieved with sculptured gold for which the 'fin de siècle' artists are renowned. This captivating Art Nouveau brooch epitomizes the jewelry design of the era in which naturalism, suggestion of form and mystical imagery were inherent. The reverse is rendered in matte yellow gold, outfitted with the original elongated hinged pin and hook closure.
