This antique Georgian brooch with moss agate, black onyx and natural seed pearls is crafted in 15ct yellow gold, weighs 15.9g and measures 37mm long, 31mm wide and 10mm deep. This authentic, early 19th century Georgian brooch of exquisite aesthetic and craftsmanship, probably of English provenance, is designed as a dual-layered, scallop-edged, ovular plaque. A fascinating ovular slab of moss agate measuring 21.5mm long and 16.5mm wide graded 'blue-gray with dark brown and tan' color constitutes the upper layer of the ovular plaque, encircled by a lustrous rim of temptingly delicate, 'cream to gray' colored natural seed-pearls mounted in closed settings. Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony quartz, frequently occurring in multi-shades of green that resembles moss or trees from a distance, but it can less frequently be found with bands of brown agate and when this occurs, it is commonly referred to as 'mocha stone'. The ovular 'banded beauty' as agate was called in Europe during the Renaissance era, is surrounded by twelve alluring semi-circular black onyx cabochons graded 'jet-black' color, mounted in closed foil-backed settings and framed in artfully chased 15ct yellow gold. The alluringly scalloped black-onyx surround is complemented by a color-contrasting natural seed pearl and chased yellow gold perimeter. An original hinged pin and a C-hook clasp closure conclude this unique antique Georgian moss agate, black onyx and natural seed pearl brooch.
