The ancient technique of Micro-mosaic originated in Rome in mid-eighteenth century and was particularly in vogue throughout the Victorian era. The early 19th century pieces were mostly produced in Rome, made of minute polychrome glass tesserae, collectively administered to an appropriate plaque depicting naturalistic motifs from the designs of ancient floor mosaics or color-enriched floral patterns. This authentic work of art is mounted within an ovular setting, encircled by an elaborately designed ovular frame rendered in twisted and corded wire and embellished with decorative foliate scrolls in quatrefoil motif. This exquisite Victorian micro-mosaic pendant features a locket compartment to conceal a photograph or a lock of hair of a loved one or any other memento of sentimental and romantic significance. The reverse is rendered in Plexiglas(crystal)constituting the transparent locket lid. The supporting matching vermeil chain is composed of interlocking, inversely juxtaposed delicate 'rings' creating a delightful pattern, and is secured by a spring-ring clasp.
