This carnelian intaglio Victorian Ring crafted in 18k rose and white gold, weighs 8.8g and measures 23mm wide and 4mm deep. Characterizing the highly popular design of the 1860's intaglio rings inspired by Greek and Roman revivalism, this impressive and stately ring incorporates a rose gold framed ovular carnelian plaque measuring 20mm long and 15mm wide, graded 'bright pale-rust' color, surmounting an elegantly plain curvilinear gallery. Artistically intaglio-carved is the portrait of a helmeted Roman Warrior, all features carved with accuracy and attention to details. This exquisite example of Victorian Jewelry, a Victorian intaglio ring, features meticulously ridged, bi-tone shoulders of stylized triumvirate design, tapering to merge into a bi-tone spherical band and an easily sizable shank.

The culture of the Renaissance had a significant impact on stimulating the revival of 'the art of engraving' and also the desire to collect intaglio-engraved stones and gems which had survived from antiquity. Benevenuto Cellini described in his memoirs some of the exquisite gems, including emerald, ruby, topaz, and carnelian, dug up by the peasants in Roman vineyards and sold for a few coins. They were set in rings, and served as sources of inspiration for artists throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Rings were handcrafted with intaglio engraved busts of Roman emperors and empresses, Mars Hercules, the Gorgon Medusa and the like, which were engraved in fine carnelians, chalcedonies and precious sapphires and rubies. Pride in the possession of intaglio-engraved gems is reflected in the quality of the existing ring settings devised for them, which encompassed elaborate engravings on the shoulders such as torch-bearing nude figures and floral designs.
