This antique Victorian pocket watch with rose-cut diamonds and rubies in 18k green gold weighs 22.70g and measures 43mm long, 29mm wide and 8mm deep. Superbly designed and masterfully hand-crafted, this authentic, extremely ornate open-faced Victorian time-piece features a gold dial delicately textured in the center and surrounded by foliate-inspired engravings. Arabic numerals in black enamel stand in captivating contrast with their silver background and in perfect harmony with the black arrow-headed hands, while a subsidiary constant seconds-dial substitutes the numeral '6'. This unique Victorian ladies pocket watch features a mechanical lever movement safeguarded by an inner case, a gold cuvette bearing the intaglio-engraved names and the address of the horologists 'M.B. Potevin & V. Lejeune, L.Gironde Luc, 22 Rue Viviene, Paris' and the serial number '60271'. The reverse of this enchanting case is heightened with the horologists’ hallmark and monograms applied in repoussé and intertwining antique script in italics. Both sides of the case are chased with floral-motif scrolls, delicate horizontal reedings adorned with 6 rose-cut diamonds and 0.12cts of square step-cut rubies graded 'fuchsia’ color and 'fair' clarity. The winding screw and bale are enhanced by undulating foliate-inspired scrolls. This antique ladies pocket watch exuding 19th century elegance is of French craftsmanship and bears the exclusive lozenge-shape hallmark of Paris introduced in 1797 and required on French gold, silver and platinum thereafter. Movement, dial and cuvette are all original and the watch is in excellent condition and perfect working order.
Although the majority of ladies’ watches in the 19th century were no more than a smaller version of men's pocket watches, they were distinct in the manner in which they were worn, either on the lapel, suspended from a decorative brooch or hanging from an adjustable long-guard. In Victorian society, timepieces often reflected the fashion of the day and the taste of individuals ranging from a conservative plain and polished model to more sophisticated, highly bejeweled and enameled cases.
