Founded by Charles Louis Tiffany and his partner John B. Young in 1837, the very modest establishment in New York was called Tiffany & Young, a tiny store stocked with stationery, Chinese bric-a-brac, pottery, umbrellas, and desks. It was not until 1848 that they began to emphasize on what would eventually become their most important lines of production: jewelry and silver. In the year 1886, Tiffany introduced the six-pronged setting for diamond solitaires which has continued to bear the name of 'Tiffany setting' to the present time. Louis Comfort Tiffany took over the direction of his father's jewelry workshops after he died in 1902. Eighty-five percent of the gold jewelry sold today by 'Tiffany & co.' is made on their seventh floor workshop at their Fifth Avenue address.
